We are moving rapidly towards the end of week 2 of our second Fine Arts block. This is a busy block at Leal, but the kids have been really awesome!
Mrs. Helm's Kindergartners have been absolutely lovely as they begin to learn our expectations of singing and playing in the Music classroom. Our focus this year will be on musical opposites (fast/slow, loud/soft, high/low, long/short). We will use nursery rhymes to study these opposites at different times through the year.
The 2nd graders will be starting their yearlong unit of study on the Treble clef starting next week. For now, we have focused mainly on singing and playing and learning about the topic for our end of year assembly! A major change this year is that only the 2nd and 5th graders will be performing in assemblies at the end of the year. So, these will be larger scale performances than they have been in the past and will be performed for the entire school! The 2nd graders will be singing songs about colors and reading some portions of the book The Day The Crayons Quit during their assembly. Last week, we read the book in order to become familiar with the story. I am excited about this new performance opportunity!
3rd graders will be studying the instruments of the Orchestra as their overarching topic this year. To that end, we began our conversations this week about how sound is made (vibration) and an introduction to the 4 instrument families of Woodwinds, Strings, Brass, and Percussion. We will go into more in depth focus on each individual family as the year progresses.
Finally, our 4th graders in Maestra Ana's class began their year long study of the Recorder just yesterday! So far, we've figured out how to properly make a sound (although some of us are not so consistent about that!), how to follow our recorder book, and how to play the first note (B). 4th grade parents, brace yourselves, those recorders will be coming home with a lot of them next week! :-)
