Once again, it would seem that I have missed a week in this "weekly" blog! Sorry about that. We've just been so busy creating music that I have barely had time to sit at my desk. :-)
Last week, 5th graders continued their rhythm refresher by writing original compositions using candy bar rhythms and boomwhackers. 4th graders made additional progress on recorders, 2nd graders started to learn about the staff, lines and spaces, and met Freddie the Frog who is helping us with the notes on the Treble Clef. Kindergarteners continued their study of nursery rhymes with Jack and Jill.
This week was a big one! We had our December musician of the month lessons in all classes where the students were introduced to Leonard Bernstein. Mr. Bernstein was a 20th century composer, conductor, pianist, and "music teacher" who was responsible for songs like "New York, New York" from On the Waterfront, the musical "West Side Story" , and the Young People's Concerts that were broadcast in the 50s/60s and inspired our own Young Person's Concerts at Krannert.
5th graders put their Candy Bar Compositions to work as they performed them for each other in class. 4th graders learned about breath marks and how to apply them in recorder pieces. 2nd graders solved musical mysteries about one of our songs, Clickety Clack, that has enhanced their awareness of written music. And Kindergarteners learned our newest nursery rhyme, Hickory Dickory Dock.
Finally, 2nd, 4th, and 5th graders had their parent play days just today! It is always so wonderful to have you all come in and play with us and see what a typical day is like in the music room. (4th grade parents, you are welcome for not doing a recorder lesson today!) Kindergartners will have their parent play day this coming Tuesday afternoon.
Just one week left until the end of this Fine Arts block! Have a good weekend.
