We are 1/3 of the way done with the school year! Crazy! Last week, students in Kindergarten (Rios/Stansbury), 1st Grade, 4th Grade (Martin/Headtike), and 5th Grade at Leal started their 3rd Fine Arts block by joining me in Music. We spent the first week just setting our expectations, getting to know one another, and playing/singing.
During this short week, students will get a chance to learn about their first Musician of the Month for this year, John Philip Sousa. I am excited to teach about Mr. Sousa especially because of his connection to the University of Illinois. I have recently received a grant to have Mr. Scott Schwartz, the head of the Sousa Archives at U of I, come visit in the Spring to give us a broader picture of Mr. Sousa. In the meantime, students are learning about his time with the U.S. Marine Corps Band, his attempt to run away and join the circus when he was 13 years old, and his invention of the Sousaphone. And of course, we are listening to Stars and Stripes Forever.
I am excited to work with my last "new" group of the school year and hope your year is going smoothly so far!
